Today the Dolphins cut their roster down to 53 players in advance of the start of the regular season. The roster moves were made in three different categories:
-20 players were waived. These are players with less than four years service time and they must pass through the waiver wire.
-Six players had their contracts terminated. These are veterans with four or more years in the league.
After what seems like an abnormally long NFL off-season (even though it really wasn’t), football is finally back. The Fins open up the 2011 preseason tonight at the Georgia Dome against the defending #1 seed in the NFC playoffs, the Atlanta Falcons.
While the Falcons–a team that went 13-3 last year–are coming off a stinging blowout loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers in the Divisional Playoffs, the Dolphins are looking to start fresh after a second consecutive 7-9 season.
Coach Tony Sparano released his first depth chart of the 2011 season today and while a LOT will change between now and the regular season opener on September 12th, it’s always fun to see where guys stack up heading into pre-season game number one. Here are my notes and observations:
- QB: Chad Henne is the starter, with Matt Moore #2.
Sunday’s scrimmage was well executed on both sides of the ball with quarterback Chad Henne looking the way all Dolphin fans want to see him perform on September 12th! Henne looked in control of the offense and in command locating the football. The Henne to Brandon Marshall connection was what everybody came to see, and they left with smiles on their faces.
