Wake Ranked Top Edge Rusher In AFC By
By on July 24, 2014 at 5:29 pm

072414-WakeCameron Wake‘s abilities as an edge rusher are well known throughout the NFL. Wake wasn’t a superstar name, or even a notable name by any stretch, when he originally entered the NFL in 2005. In fact, he didn’t garner any attention at all, going undrafted and being released by the team that signed him in the New York Giants.

He blossomed after a two-year stop in the Canadian Football League and then a contract with the Miami Dolphins in 2009. His 51.5 sacks through five seasons, an AP All-Pro nod in 2012, along with three Pro Bowl trips – including one coming last season – and Wake is getting well deserved recognition. He’s produced on the national stage for Miami countless times, most recently with a game ending safety against the Cincinnati Bengals to give the Dolphins a victory on Thursday Night Football on Halloween night last season.

He’s part of the top crowd of players at his position, and is being recognized for it. As part of an article ranking the top edge rushers going into the NFL season, NFL Media’s Chris Wesseling ranked him as a member of the most elite category, and concluded that he was the best edge rusher in the AFC.

“Wake might be the NFL’s best pass rusher since the start of the 2010 season,” said Wesseling. “His should be a household name.”

Wake was ranked second in the league behind Rams defensive end Robert Quinn, and was listed ahead of other All-Pros such as Aldon Smith, Robert Mathis, DeMarcus Ware, and Clay Matthews III. The Dolphins defensive leader was also listed amongst the NFL’s most underrated players by Greg Rosenthal of NFL Media.

He was also ranked as the 66th best player overall in the NFL by his peers as part of NFL Network’s Top 100 Players list.
