Wake Goes 11th in 2005 Draft Revisit

032714-wake660As we inch closer and closer to the 2014 NFL Draft, it becomes commonplace to look back on previous drafts to evaluate where NFL draft experts and talent evaluators got it right and got it wrong when it comes to current players. Sometimes, teams hit it right on the head, locking in a superstar. But at other times, you cringe on how bad a team missed on a guy, as a player with so much promise turns out to be a major bust.

In an article published on, NFL Media analyst Bucky Brooks revisited the 2005 NFL Draft and made some interesting selections when it came to that draft, particularly at the 11th spot overall. With the Dallas Cowboys on the clock with the 11th pick in the 2005 NFL draft, they originally selected DeMarcus Ware, a seven-time Pro Bowl outside linebacker with 574 tackles, 117 sacks, and 32 forced fumbles to his name. But Ware wasn’t available to the Cowboys the second time around, having being picked second overall by the Miami Dolphins, in place of running back Ronnie Brown.

So with Ware off the board, the Cowboys went in a similar direction, drafting a dynamic pass rusher with an incredible burst off the line and a tireless motor. They selected current Dolphins defensive end and three-time Pro Bowl selection Cameron Wake.

“Wake is a high-energy pass rusher with the speed, quickness and athleticism to wreak havoc off the edges. While he is not quite up to Ware’s level, Wake’s numbers are near the top of the charts over the past few seasons,” said Brooks.

It’s an amazing jump for Wake, going from being undrafted to all the way to the top half of the first round. Wake originally didn’t even make an NFL roster that season, and didn’t feature in the league until 2009 after spending two seasons in the Canadian Football League. But then the Penn State product made it back to the NFL with the Dolphins that year, and has put up some dominant performances ever since, making the Pro Bowl three out of the past four years including this past season.
