Prisco Praises Wallace, New Offense

131205_CountdownCBS Sports Senior NFL columnist Pete Prisco joined The Finsiders on Monday to share his thoughts on the state of the team heading into the 2014 season. Prisco touched on a variety of topics, including the progression of quarterback Ryan Tannehill, the question marks surrounding the linebacker position, and the depth and experience in the secondary. However, when it came to Offensive Coordinator Bill Lazor’s new look offense and the effect it could have on wide receiver Mike Wallace, Prisco was especially optimistic.

Last year, in his first season with Miami, Wallace had a solid season, statistically speaking. He hauled in a career high 73 passes, and reached the end zone a respectable five times. However, as Wallace would later acknowledge, the story at the end of the season was not about the opportunities he cashed in on, it was more so about the opportunities he missed. Wallace didn’t reach his full potential with the Dolphins last season , but according to Prisco, Bill Lazor’s new, up-tempo offense could get him there.

“Last year’s offense was kind of basic to me, not a lot of movement. This one will have some movement,” Prisco said. “You need to get Mike Wallace more involved.  He’s not a one trick pony.  They have to allow him to do more, and I think this offense will give him more of those opportunities.”

Lazor’s offense will move Wallace all over the field in all types of formations instead of primarily being used on the right side of the field like he was previously, allowing him to use his elite speed and agile skill set to succeed this season. Prisco pointed out a play Wallace made in Pittsburgh in 2012, where he took a simple crossing route 51 yards for a touchdown, as an excellent example of how Wallace’s speed and athleticism should be used.

“You can’t teach speed, and he’s got the acceleration to run by people,” Prisco said. “That’s why you have to get him involved in some of the other routes, because then they come up and start pressing him, and you go by them.”

“Get him in the middle of the field.  I think it’ll be more effective with the deep ball.”
