Philbin Earns High Praise From Delmas
By on August 19, 2014 at 12:20 pm

TFree safety Louis Delmas joined The Finsiders  for a candid interview that included everything from the state of the team as the season approaches, to the way Kevin Coyle’s defense compares to the one he played in Detroit. One of the more interesting topics broached with Delmas, however, had to do with the relationship he’s built with Head Coach Joe Philbin.

Following a grind of a season in 2013, Philbin entered the new year determined to right the ship after just missing the postseason for the fifth straight season last year.  So far the coach has drawn rave reviews from players and media alike, with many acknowledging that Philbin appears looser and more in command this season than he ever has in his three years with the team. Delmas confirmed this with The Finsiders, saying that even though he wasn’t here last season, he can still still see a difference.

“I talked to a couple players, and they said that he [Philbin] is completely different from last year,” Delmas said.  “He’s a great dude.”

One noticeable difference in the 2014 Philbin is the way his practices are structured. Last season practices were quiet, with the only noise coming during 11-11’s when crowd noise was played to simulate a game situation. This year there is no crowd noise. Instead, Philbin has chosen a route that was suggested to him by some of his players- playing music. All throughout practice, and especially during team drills, music can be heard ringing through the Dolphins training facility, and, according to Delmas, it’s had an overwhelmingly positive effect.

“One thing that I love about him is, he’s trying to learn, he’s trying to open up, and he’s doing a great job at it,” Delmas said. “I’m definitely loving what I see, and I definitely appreciate it.”

As for Philbin’s dance moves? Well, Delmas acknowledged that those still need a little work.

“He probably has two left feet and two right feet,” Delmas said. “They’re all criss-crossed. Do I have to get him into a couple classes to get him some more dance moves? Yeah, I need to get him in there.”

For more of Delmas’ thoughts regarding Joe Philbin, along with how this defense compares to other defenses he’s played on, watch the rest of his interview with The Finsiders right here.
