Peter King Bullish On Dolphins Defense
By on August 2, 2014 at 9:01 am

080114-WakeMost of the focus surrounding the 2014 Miami Dolphins has been on the offensive side of the ball with the development of the third year quarterback Ryan Tannehill and the new offensive line. Miami’s defense has quietly been flying under the radar after a performance last year that was eighth-best in the league in points allowed. In fact, the Dolphins have finished in the top eight in points allowed the past two seasons, a feat also only accomplished by Seattle, San Francisco, and Cincinnati. Miami also allowed the third fewest passing touchdowns in 2013. While the offensive looks to be a work in progress at this point during training camp, the defense looked primed and ready to be impact players this upcoming season.

It’s one of the prevailing thoughts around the NFL going into the year, and Peter King of is one of those people that agrees with that sentiment. According to King, the Dolphins defense has the talent to be one of the best in the league if their plan comes together on that side of the ball.

“You know, I think they should be a top ten defense if the secondary holds up,” said King. “I’m bullish on their defense and I think they have a good one.”

One of the cornerstones of this Dolphins defense is obviously defensive end Cameron Wake. The three-time Pro Bowler and 2012 all-pro is the heart and soul of Miami’s vicious gap-shooting defense, and King says that Wake is one of his favorite players at the position. King interviewed Wake as part of his ongoing training camp series and is a big fan of Wake’s long and arduous journey to the league.

“Cameron Wake to me is one of my three favorite pass rushers in the league,” said King. “The thing I love about him, and I told him this. I said the thing I really like you is that you have a true appreciation of your life, of he fact that you almost didn’t have this life, and eight years ago you were working out in a gym just praying that somebody would give you a chance. And he made something of himself. That’s why it’s really, really easy to root for Cam Wake.”
