Marino To Face Montana One More Time
By on April 25, 2014 at 1:51 pm

Marino montanaDan Marino and Joe Montana had some serious aerial battles back in the day. The Hall of Fame quarterbacks faced each other three times during their careers, with Marino getting the best of Montana in two of the three meetings. He first beat Montana is his rookie year in 1983, 20-17 , and then topped Joe Cool 27-17 in the 1994 AFC Wild Card round when Montana was a member of the Kansas City Chiefs. In fact, the Dolphins were a problem for Montana for his entire regular season career, as he went 0-3 against Miami (he only played against Marino once in those regular season meetings, the aforementioned rookie win in which number 13 threw for 194 yards and two touchdowns).

But in the most notable of Marino-Montana duel, Super Bowl XIX, Super Joe and the 49ers bested Marino and the Dolphins 38-16 behind Montana’s 331-yard, three-touchdown passing performance. Although Marino was beaten that day while throwing for 318 yards and a touchdown at Stanford Stadium in January 1985, Dan The Man will have another opportunity to take down Montana, albeit under much different circumstances.

As announced by the 49ers yesterday, Marino has been chosen to lead a team of former NFL players against Montana, Jerry Rice, Roger Craig, Dwight Clark and other San Francisco 49ers  legends in a flag-football game scheduled at Candlestick Park for July 12, one of the final events to be held at “The Stick.”

Tickets for the event will go on sale May 10.
