Grimes Ranked Among Top Cover Corners By

071114-GrimesBrent Grimes‘ cover skills are well documented. The energetic corner with epic leaping ability and tremendous recovery speed returned to football prominence last season with the Miami Dolphins. Grimes made his first Pro Bowl since 2010 thanks to a four interception season in which he didn’t allow a single touchdown to a receiver. Grimes helped lead one of the strongest secondaries in the league in terms of defending the pass, as the Dolphins only allowed 17 passing touchdowns through the air all last season, third best in the league.

This strong season from Grimes has apparently caught the attention of the national media in the form of a former scout and current analyst at, Bucky Brooks. As part of NFL Media’s Brooks’ “Bucky’s Best” series, Brooks ranked the top pure cover corners in the NFL in terms of attributes such as athleticism, technical skills, football IQ and competitive spirit, and listed Grimes as #6 overall in the league.

It’s hard for some scouts to embrace a diminutive corner (5-10 or shorter) on the perimeter, but it’s impossible to ignore Grimes’ production in 2013. In his seventh pro season, Grimes finished with four picks and 17 pass breakups, displaying tremendous athleticism and skill as a cover corner. He excels at winning 50-50 balls down field, with his superb leaping skills allowing him to compete against big-bodied pass catchers. There’s a lot to like about what Grimes brings to the table as a No. 1 corner, including 16 interceptions in his past 61 games.

Grimes was ranked ahead of  Vontae Davis, Jonathan Joseph, Antonio Cromartie, and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. He was ranked behind Aqib Talib, Joe Haden, Darrelle Revis, Patrick Peterson, and Richard Sherman.

His fantastic 2013 campaign led to him re-signing with the Dolphins this past offseason, and there will once again be high expectations on the veteran corner to live up to the billing as one of the league’s best.
