Delmas Roar

Playing in the NFL is an opportunity of a lifetime that few ever get to experience and even fewer are able to play for their hometown team. But new Miami Dolphins safety Louis Delmas was able to go home again when the 26-year-old North Miami Beach High School graduate and Fort Pierce, Florida native signed with the Fins before NFL Free Agency opened a few weeks ago.

Known for his bruising physical play in the secondary, the soft-spoken Delmas gave a humble take on his homecoming speaking to’s Tristin Jones at the Ronald McDonald House of Miami, and talked about the role he expects to fill with the Fins this season.

“I know when I first joined the NFL, I felt like a champion, I felt like I won,” said Delmas. “But now I actually feel like Muhammad Ali and conquered my goal of being able to perform in front of my peers and perform in my hometown. I’m very excited and very happy.”

Now back in a place he called home, Delmas wants to leave a lasting legacy. That starts with being a leader both on and off the field. But that doesn’t mean he has to be too serious. According to Delmas, there’s no point in playing this game that he loves without having fun.

“I was always known for leading not be verbally but by my actions, even though I can go out there and spaz out at times. I just plan on coming in here and having fun, trying to rise the guys up around me, and let them know that what we’re doing right now is for a living, and it’s for fun,” said Delmas. “We’re one of the few people that has the occupation that we’re having fun while we’re doing it so, so just go out there and have fun and enjoy it. Just live it up.”

Delmas will be just one part of secondary that looks adept at foring turnovers, the core value of defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle’s defense. He believes that fans should expect a lot of physical play and some serious hits and plays to be made this season.

“From Grimes, to Cortland (Finnegan), to me, to Reshad (Jones), each one of us has spectacular talent about one another,” said Delmas. “We’re very feisty, very fast and love to make contact when we get to the ball. Dolphins fans can expect some physical plays, some very talented players, and some fast and tough plays.”
