Since the duo of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick officially formed back in 2001, the New England Patriots have owned the AFC East, winning 11 of the next 13 division titles. However, according to NFL Network’s Charley Casserly, if any team is to end New England’s division dominance, it’s going to be the Miami Dolphins.
In an interview with The Finsiders last Friday, Casserly discussed the job GM Dennis Hickey has done in his first few months on the job, what he hopes to see from Ryan Tannehill in his third season, and, most notably, what the expectations are for the Dolphins this season.
“When you ask the question who has the best chance to unseat the Patriots [in the AFC East], the answer is the Dolphins, in my opinion,” Casserly said. “Part of that is Ryan Tannehill because he’s the second best QB in this division. Part of that is the defense.”
According to Casserly, the offensive improvements Hickey made in the offseason, combined with the progression of Tannehill, should help close the gap even more this season.
“At the end of last season, you asked, how do we get better,” Casserly said. “Well, you’ve got to get better on the offensive line. I think you check that box. You continue to add receivers. Jarvis Landry. You check that box. You add running back depth. Knowshon Moreno, so you check that box, although it’s in pencil right now because you have to get him out there. It’s a growing process. Hopefully they do take a significant jump this year… They have the best chance to beat the Patriots, but the offense has to take the next step.”
