5 Questions With Randy Starks
By on July 9, 2014 at 12:32 pm

PGoing into his 11th season in the NFL, Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Randy Starks is a two-time Pro Bowl selection and the longest-tenured member of the Dolphins defense. He’s looking forward to the 2014 season after signing a new contract this past offseason to remain with the team. With most of the same faces surrounding him, Starks sees this upcoming season as a possible banner year for a unit that features experience, talent, and depth at every defensive position.

Greg Likens of The Finsiders sat down with the Starks to talk to him about what he expects from the Dolphins defense in 2014.

On returning to the Dolphins for the next two years:

“It feels really good. This is somewhere that I want to finish my career. I’ve been here for six, going on seven years now, and I like it here. Right now, I’m just glad to be here for the next two years.”

On what changes to expect on the defensive side of the ball in 2014:

“I think we’re just going to stick to what we do best, and that’s just play physical. I don’t think anything’s really going to change as far as our scheme goes. I think the most we might do is make things simpler and try to execute things more consistently than we did last year.”

On a player transitioning to a new role as Koa Misi is doing:

“You see blocks different; plays develop different from different positions. That’s one of the main things between OTA’s and camp, you want to get that feel and get your reads down. I know for me, just playing inside, the closer you are inside the faster the plays are on you, so I’m pretty sure it’s the same going from (outside linebacker to middle linebacker) and so on.”

On the defenses ability to pressure the quarterback:

“I just see everybody going out there and being productive. That’s one of the things we want to do. We don’t want to have to blitz to get to the quarterback. You want to use four down [linemen] and just be aggressive. That’s our plan this year and we expect big things.”

On what it takes to get back to playoffs:

“The main thing is being consistent. That’s one of things the last few years that we haven’t done. We showed strides; we’d beat teams that people probably didn’t think we would beat, and then lose to teams we should have beaten. So I think if we play consistent we’ll be back in the playoffs.”
