3 Observations From Day 2 Of Minicamp
By on June 18, 2014 at 6:28 pm

061814 CongemiThe second of three minicamp practices concluded today with the offense bouncing back after a challenging first practice yesterday. The Dolphins focused on more situational details, such as end of game and end of half scenarios, and two-point conversions and red zone preparation. There were also multiple big play connections between quarterback Ryan Tannehill and the wide receiving corps. The day played particular attention to special teams as well.

Here’s some of my observations from today’s minicamp practice:

1. Sturgis Showing Off: The majority of today’s practice focused on the special teams, and although I haven’t mentioned the kicking game much throughout OTAs and minicamp, second year placekicker Caleb Sturgis has had a strong showing so far. Sturgis has been next to perfect throughout the offseason, and like some of the other second year players, seems to have a different type of confidence heading into the 2014 season. His leg strength has never been questioned, and today he backed that up by making a 58 yard field goal with ease. Sturgis can definitely be a weapon, not only on kickoffs, but continually becoming a more consistently accurate placekicker.

2. Bouncing Back: From the outset, it was definitely a better day on the offensive side of the football for Ryan Tannehill and company. There were a number of plays today where Tannehill was able to deliver the football on time and accurately down the field. During portions of the seven on seven period, he twice connected on deep balls, once to Brian Hartline, and another to Armon Binns, who had a spectacular day catching the football. It was nice to see that it was more of a balanced outcome, where the defense had their moments and the offense did as well.

3. Just A Little More: Today’s practice seemed to have a focus on the little things, as the team got technical, and paid attention to every little detail they may come across during the season. Keeping that theme, here are some bullet point observations from practice:

  • Center Mike Pouncey was back at work today after having a well deserved day off yesterday.
  • Today it was middle linebacker Koa Misi’s day to observe, as well as Cortland Finnegan for the second day in a row. This gave plenty of opportunity to second year players Jelani Jenkins and Jamar Taylor to get more repetitions.
  • The combination of Tannehill to Mike Wallace found the endzone with a corner route touchdown at near the end practice.
  • Safety Jimmy Wilson continues to make his presence known on the field.
  • Rookie corner Walt Aikens tried to impersonate Jimmy Wilson today by playing multiple positions, including a look at safety for the second day in a row.
