What They’re Saying: Fins On The Jets

113013-saying660This Sunday, the Miami Dolphins will square off in one of the NFL’s great rivarly games, as they head to Met Life stadium for a meeting with the New York Jets. Both teams are vying for the final playoff spot in the AFC, so the stakes are riding high as they have been so many times before over this series’ history. Take a look at what’s being said in Miami’s locker room about the Jets in this week’s edition of “What They’re Saying”.

Coach Philbin

On the Jets’ offense – “Yeah, they have good players. They have a real talented receiver. Obviously (Santonio) Holmes is a very, very talented guy. Jeff Cumberland is playing very well at tight end. Both their backs I think have been productive for them running the ball hard. And (Geno) Smith can make all of the plays. You can see on tape. He’s got a very good arm. He can move. He’s elusive. He can extend plays. It’s a good football team.”

Ryan Tannehill

On his impressions of Rex Ryan’s defense – “They’re a good defense. They play fast. They’ve got a lot of guys. Their front seven is really good. Muhammad Wilkerson is a guy on the front line who you see standing out. As a unit, they are very good against the run, tough to run against and play the pass decently well.”

On what stands out to him in the Jets’ secondary – “They have some veteran guys. They just signed Ed Reed, so he’s getting settled in on the secondary. (Antonio) Cromartie, like you said. They’ve got a rookie on the other side and a safety as well. (It’s) a good mix of guys who can make plays”

On if he feels there is a number of wins needed for playoff implications – “We understand the situation. What that number is we don’t know, but we are under the impression we have to win the rest of our games. That’s the mindset we have to have at this point. We don’t know how it is going to shake out, but all we can do is win one game at a time. And it starts this week with the Jets.”

Brent Grimes

On Geno Smith – “There’s opportunities to turn it over any game. He’s a quarterback; he’s a rookie. He he has some hot spots, he has some low spots, but that’s what you expect as  rookie quarterback coming in. But I’m approaching it like we’re playing a vet. He can make all the throws, he’s put it on tape that he can.”

Lamar Miller

On playing in New York – “This is my second time playing there. Last year, I don’t really remember how it was. I know it’s going to be pretty loud and their fans are going to be kind of crazy.”

On the Jets’ run defense – “They’ve got a good front seven. They’ve been doing a phenomenal job just doing their assignments, but we’ve just got to come out this week and just do our assignments that the coaches [have] been telling us throughout this whole week and just try to make plays to move the ball.”

Cameron Wake

On Geno Smith – “He’s obviously a guy who can make big plays, explosive plays, which as a defense, you don’t want anything to do with. And the way they’ve been running the ball, they’ve been downhill hammering. That’s always been the kind of game we love as a defense.”

Jared Odrick

On what the Jets’ run game does well – “They work together. They stick with it. It’s not a bad thing, I’m complimenting them that they are hard-headed in terms of, they’ll make something work. They’ve been good at that, and that’s something we have to stop.”
