What They’re Saying: Fins On The Bucs

Mike_JamesWhile the focus of the national media may be on anything but actual football, the players inside the Dolphins locker room are still fixated intently on tonight’s game against Tampa Bay. This week’s ‘What They’re Saying’ provides insight to how Miami feels about the primetime matchup.

Coach Philbin

On what he’s seen on film from Mike Glennon: “He’s doing very well. I believe the last four games offensively you can see a difference. I believe they are averaging around 20 points a game their last four games as opposed to I want to say 11 (points-per-game) their first four games. He does an excellent job in the pocket. He’s courageous. He’s done an excellent job protecting the football. I want to say he has only three interceptions. I don’t have my stats in front of me. I think for a young guy he’s done extremely well. He went last week into a tough environment, and I want to say his quarterback rating was 120 or somewhere in that vicinity. This guy is doing a good job.”

On the emergence of Mike James and what threat he poses for the Dolphins defense: “He’s got very good balance. I think his vision is good. He runs with good pad level. As you’ve mentioned, I thought it was as good of running day. That’s a pretty good run defense out there, and it’s a tough place to play. Coach (Greg) Schiano and his staff had the team ready to go, and Mike James was a big part of that.”

On how the Dolphins receivers plan to face Darrelle Revis: “Well (our receivers) have a lot of respect for him. I think the Tampa Bay defense overall is playing very well. They’ve got a lot of impact guys. Their team speed on defense is very good. They play well as a unit, and he’s a big part of that. He’s got all the skills you are looking for from a corner. He’s got size, he can run, he’s got instincts in terms of reading the routes, he transitions well, he can play bump and he can play off. Some guys can only function maybe in one of those two capacities. He’s got versatility, and he’s a heck of a player. I know our guys have a lot of respect for him.”

On Gerald McCoy: “Yeah, he jumps off the film. He has exceptional quickness. He can run. He can do both, he can play the run well he can make plays outside the box. He’s not just a guy who plays tackle-to-tackle. He can get to the perimeter and chase a guy down. He has strength to hold point, and he’s a very good pass rusher. He jumps off the tape. He’s very, very good.”

Cameron Wake

On by looking at last week’s game tape for the Bucs, would he be shocked if they were winless if he didn’t already know their record: “Everybody knows their record and it’s not a secret but in the same breath, I’ve never been in a football game where you can just go out there and just throw your hat in the ring and come out with a win.  Every week it’s a fight, every time you’re on the field, every play it’s a battle.  Obviously they have great football players, obviously you think a team that hasn’t won a game maybe they’re not good or they’re a bunch of guys who don’t have it together, but that’s obviously not the case.  They’ve been hanging in there tough with games and we’ve had some games that have come down to the wire that didn’t go our way and by no means did that mean we’re not a good group of guys or guys who make plays.  I don’t look at their record and say ‘Oh this is the kind of team they are.’  You have to look at their play and the way they get after it and you have to kind of assess that and make sure that on Monday you give it your best because you know those guys will.”

On what he sees from Mike Glennon on film: “Well to begin with, taking care of the football.  Probably one of the largest stats in the game is turnovers.  He’s taking care of the football, making smart decisions.  Like you said maybe he’s a young guy, maybe he doesn’t have as many stripes but at the same time he is playing at a different level and anytime you have a guy like that running the show, you have to be on your p’s and q’s as a defense.  That’s definitely a challenge that we’re ready to face and we’re already preparing for that and we’ll definitely be ready come Monday night”

On his impressions of Mike James: “I’m definitely impressed.  It’s interesting, that’s why we play this game.  Every week, week in, week out, it doesn’t matter if you are a quote on quote, marque guy or not this is the NFL.  You have the best of the best on the planet to do it.  He’s obviously running the ball well, I don’t even remember the exact stats, but I think they had 200 rushing yards against Seattle.  Obviously, Seattle is a good defense, they’re running the ball well, taking care of the football.  All of the ingredients to make plays and win at the end of the game and like I said earlier, by no means is it going to be just a show up and win kind of game.  We’re going to have to go out there and give it a battle.”

Lamar Miller

On the Buccaneers’ defense: “They’ve got a good defense. They’ve got a lot of skill players, fast guys. Their front seven is one of the best that we’ll be facing this season. Their d-line is pretty fast, they have good linebackers, so we just have to prepare and do our assignments so we can attack those guys.”
