Wallace’s Speed Evident All Over The Field

Wallace practiceEveryone knows about Mike Wallace‘s elite speed. It’s something that allows him to create separation from defensive backs.

The Miami Dolphins’ most talked about offseason acquisition has flashed his speed numerous times throughout his four-year career. The talented wideout runs one of the top nine routes in the National Football League and has garnered a reputation for blazing by many a defensive back.

Yet, the most forgotten and underrated part of his game is the ability to run after the catch. In an interview with The Finsiders that aired Monday night, Wallace talked about his ability to rack up yardage after making a catch.

“I think my yards after catch is big,” Wallace said. “I think I made a lot of big plays with the ball in my hands.”

Wallace is most dangerous when he gets into the open field and is able to run free. He can take a basic slant or under route of 1-10 yards, and transform it into a game changing play.

The greatest example of that was last season against the New York Giants.  Wallace was able to turn a simple a three-yard hitch route, switch on the afterburner, and speed past Big Blue’s defense for a 51-yard touchdown. He’s got the speed to accelerate by defenders, simply by outrunning them, and that leads to a whole lot of yards after the initial catch.

“I’m always getting extra yards,” Wallace said. “I can make small plays into big plays or whatever. It doesn’t always have to be a long ball. It can be short, and just make it long.”

But of course, he can still catch the deep ball with the best of them.
