Sturgis Confident From Distance
By on September 17, 2013 at 2:41 pm

After unseating veteran kicker Dan Carpenter from the starting role in Miami, Caleb Sturgis hasn’t faltered. The rookie out of the University of Florida was a perfect 3-for-3 in his debut against the Cleveland Browns, an effort that was good enough to earn the kicker NFL Rookie Of The Week honors.

And after fan voting concluded, it was revealed that Sturgis did in fact earn the Rookie Of The Week honors for week one.

“Honestly, I was pretty shocked,” Sturgis told The Finsiders with a grin. “I just thought it was cool that I was up for it. Must not have been a great week for the rookies, but it was really neat. Obviously, I really appreciate all the fans who voted for me.”

The former Gator followed up his bright NFL debut by nailing a 54-yard attempt just before the half in Miami’s week two game at Indianapolis, despite being on the road and having to kick it twice after an icing attempt by the Colts.

Sturgis brushed off the topic of “icing”, claiming it’s not a tactic that typically gets under his skin.

“It’s never bothered me too much,” he said. “It just seems like something everybody does. You have to assume they’re not icing you when you go out there for the first time and you go and do your kick. Second time, it’s the same thing and I think your percentage is going to be the same both times you go out there.”

Perhaps most impressively, though, wasn’t the fact that Sturgis was good from distance twice in a row, but that his second attempt rocketed through the uprights with what looked like 10 yards to spare.

“It felt good coming off my foot,” he said. “I looked up and I knew it was in.”

Speaking of distance, Sturgis admitted he’s confident in his ability kick accurately from distances even longer than his 54-yard shot this past weekend.

“I think anything 60 and under, I’m pretty confident the ball is definitely going to get there,” he said. “Certain days, I think I can add a few yards on that. Certain days, with the winds, it might take a few away. But that’s a spot I always feel pretty comfortable at.”
