REPORTS: Starks to Receive Franchise Tag
By on March 4, 2013 at 11:42 am

randy-starksWith a 4pm deadline looming, multiple reports have emerged stating that two-time Pro Bowl DT Randy Starks has received the franchise tag designation from the Dolphins.

The value of the franchise tag for defensive tackles this year is $8.45 million and this means that Starks, who was to be an unrestricted free agent, will be in Miami in 2013.

Teams can only tag one player per offseason, which means that Reggie Bush, Jake Long, Brian Hartline, Sean Smith and the other seven unrestricted free agents-to-be on the Dolphins roster will be free to sign elsewhere beginning next Tuesday, 3/12, at 4pm, unless they agree to deals with Miami prior to that time.

The last time the Dolphins used the franchise tag was also on a defensive tackle, Paul Soliai, following the 2010 season. The following year, he signed a long-term deal to stay in Miami.

Starks has played the last five years of his nine-year career in Miami, collecting nine sacks and three interceptions the past two seasons. The 29-year old was a third round pick of the Titans in 2004 out of Maryland and was selected to the Pro Bowl following the 2010 and 2012 seasons.
