Incognito: “This Is Enough”

052313_Incognito_closeFour weeks through the 2013 season, Dolphins guard Richie Incognito is nearing a breaking point when it comes to pass protection. Ryan Tannehill has been sacked 18 times, putting Miami on pace to allow 72 sacks this season.

Incognito hasn’t been shy about taking accountability and on Wednesday afternoon, he reiterated his thoughts about the need to improve pass protection.

“We’ve got to protect,” He said after practice. “We’ve got to protect our butts off. It’s obviously been an issue. He’s been hit way too much. We know if we keep him clean, we’re going to have success, so it’s on everybody. It’s on everybody on the offense to help protect Ryan.”

Miami’s starting left guard even took it a step further, leaving zero doubt in anyone’s minds he and the rest of the offensive line are taking the issue seriously.

“If we give up 72 sacks, everybody should be fired — I think the whole offensive line,” Incognito said. “That’s atrocious. If he gets sacked 72 times, there’s obviously a major problem and I don’t think anybody can handle that many sacks.

“I’ve been on teams in St. Louis where we’ve given up 50 sacks – it’s not fun. We’ve been through many quarterbacks. It’s our job to step up. There comes a point and time as a competitor where you just have to say, ‘This is enough.’ And I think we’re getting to that breaking point. We’re sick of hearing about it. We’re sick of talking about it every week. It just comes a point where you [just have] to get it done.”

This week won’t be any easier for Incognito and the offensive line, as the Ravens bring pass rushers Terrell Suggs and Elvis Dumervil to town, who have a combined six sacks already on the year. However, Incognito says he’s confident Tannehill won’t let the high sack number phase him.

“Not at all,” he said.  “I think he stands in there strong. One of the great traits about Ryan is he’s poised. He’s not going to let a sack deter him; he’s not going to let an interception deter him. So I think he’s done a really good job of playing each play and kind of taking the good with the bad and just keep playing.”
