Gibson Thinks Dolphins Offense Is Going To Be Very Explosive

TrioThough the intention will be to mix and match receivers around the field, someone, even if it isn’t a primary role, will log a good deal of time in the slot for the Dolphins.

For now, at this very early stage, it appears that Brandon Gibson, one of the team’s two big free-agent receiver acquisitions, will line up inside more often than either Brian Hartline or Mike Wallace. He has garnered praise for his pass-catching ability — an important trait for a slot receiver — but the slot assignment would be a new role. Last year, in St. Louis, Gibson only lined up in the slot on 8.2 percent of the time, according to Pro Football Focus.

The new Dolphins receiver recently joined NFL AM to talk about fitting into the Dolphins scheme and playing with Ryan Tannehill.

“It is a new adjustment for me because [I am] playing in a new position, just trying to learn something new. I think everything has gone well,” Gibson said. “Signing Mike Wallace, re-signing Brian Hartline and [signing] Dustin Keller, I think our offense has  a new look and we are going to be very explosive.”

The recent flurry of postseason berths orchestrated by first- or second-year quarterbacks — Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Russell Wilson, Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III — has sped up the accepted learning curve. Gibson hasn’t really experienced anything but the ever-present glare around a young, high-profile quarterback — he  played with another young gun in St. Louis, Sam Bradford.

The stakes will be as high in Miami, especially after a bold offseason, but Gibson thinks Tannehill is ready.

“With the expectations of today’s rookie quarterbacks and second year guys, I think there is no reason why he couldn’t be,” Gibson said. “He has been in the same system for a couple years now – maybe like five years. He has a very, very, very strong arm and he is very intelligent. I think expectations are high around Miami for Ryan Tannehill and I think he has the weapons to make sure we get there now.”
