Rookies who are drafted always want to make their mark in the NFL, but when they have to wait nearly the entire draft to hear their name called, they usually have an even bigger chip on their shoulder. That is the case with Dolphins 7th round pick, defensive back Don Jones, who’s looking to prove himself this summer. Jones has been through a lot at football career so far, starting his career at Arkansas State, transferring to junior college and going back to Arkansas State. He’s also changed positions several times during his time in college career, going from running back, to outside linebacker, and finally finding his place at safety. And now, he’s looking to make his mark on the Dolphins defense.
We sat down with Jones, to learn about his NFL experience so far:
(On whether it’s weird realizing that he’s now a Miami Dolphin…) – “Yes sir, it does feel pretty weird. I think I’ve been getting pretty used to it lately because at first I was still kind of shocked that I was a Miami Dolphin. But now I’m just getting the hang of it.”
(On whether it’s nice to have veterans around to help him learn the position…) –“Oh yeah. I think I get better things from each different safety because Clem (Chris Clemons) is going to be the guy who’s going to go out there and talk and do all the right checks. Then there’s Reshad (Jones) with his playmaking ability and I could also learn from Jimmy Wilson. He’s going to go out there and doing everything picture perfect every time. So, I’m very thankful that I get to learn from vets like those guys.”
(On what he can add to this football team…) – “I think I can add a whole lot of fast closing in on people, and then also I’m an okay tackler. I can go out there and make plays pretty well. Now I’m just trying to learn to be in the right spots at the right times.”
(On whether knowing your placement and position on the field is the biggest adjustment going into the NFL…) – “Yeah most definitely, because in college I actually played outside linebacker. So like the first two or three weeks of practice I was just out there in a whole different world and my mind was spinning. Now I’m starting to get the hang of it and stuff and it’s coming more natural to me, and I think I’m doing okay now.”
