ESPN Ranks Shula Third Greatest Coach In NFL History
By on June 9, 2013 at 3:45 pm

shulaWhile most Dolphin fans will surely believe that ESPN missed the mark by two spots, the network has named Don Shula as the third greatest coach in NFL history.

The countdown comes in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of Vince Lombardi’s birth and states that it salutesĀ “the finest innovators, motivators, tacticians, teachers and champions ever to stalk the sidelines.”

Shula, with 347 career wins (more than any other coach), two Super Bowl titles, the perfect season and countless other accomplishments during 33 years coaching the Colts and Dolphins, comes in on their countdown in front of George Halas (#4) and Chuck Noll (#5).

In the piece, Hall-of-Fame quarterback Bob Griese writes about Shula’s arrival in Miami:

The Dolphins were 3-10-1 the year before, but we finished 10-4 in his first season. We got to the Super Bowl the next year and we won it the next two. I think 347 wins is a terrific record. He never really slowed down and never got tired.

Other coaches in the top-20 list with Dolphins connections include Jimmy Johnson (#13) and Bill Parcells (#11).

UPDATE: Bill Walsh has been named number-two on the list and Vince Lombardi as the best of all-time.

I would have liked to see Coach Shula higher but Walsh and Lombardi were pretty impressive in their own right.

Hard to Say who is really number 1 .

But if you look at the Stats I would say Number 1

Back to Back Superbowl wins ,
    3 straight Superbowls
    6 total superbowl apearances.
    a Perfect Season.
more wins thin any other Coach.
He did more with less talent than any other Coach.
Look at the Records that Marino Set because Shula always made the most of what he had.
If it hadn’t been for the World Football League he might have won even more Superbowls.
