Walker: Dolphins QBs Could Surprise In 2012
By on June 28, 2012 at 9:34 am

Even though the Dolphins have yet to name a starting quarterback, the position is arguably the healthiest it’s been since Dan Marino retired.

Heading into training camp, uncertainty at quarterback remains, though it may be, according to ESPN’s James Walker, the deepest group in the league.

Walker, looking for an AFC East position group that could “exceed preseason expectations,” thinks the Dolphins quarterbacks have a chance to surprise in 2012.

“The Miami Dolphins are the only AFC East team without a clear-cut starter at quarterback,” Walker writes. “But they own the deepest group of quarterbacks in the division — and possibly the entire NFL.”

In terms of finding a franchise quarterback, “the next Marino” if you must, the team will look to continue to develop Tannehill. Collectively, though, it’s as solid as any Dolphins quarterback group has been in the past decade. What’s different about this group? There’s no overlap, each player has a different skill set that translates differently and successfully.

“Matt Moore, David Garrard and rookie first-round pick Ryan Tannehill all bring something to the table,” Walker writes. “Moore is coming off a career year and is a gamer. He won six of his last nine starts in 2011. Garrard has tons of experience and is a former Pro Bowler who has won in the playoffs. Tannehill has a ton of potential and can make all the throws. The rookie is Miami’s quarterback of the future.”

How do you feel about the Dolphins’ current situation at quarterback?

I think Gerrard can win for us if hes healthy and can stay healthy. I see this season being Matt Moore as the starting QB with it being his job to lose. I hope they let Tannehill develop but either vet QB is going to do well for us. Moore is a good and capable leader. Of course, now we have a full off season.
