Tannehill Tries to Take Early Leadership Role
By on May 8, 2012 at 12:20 pm

Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill wasted no time trying to get some of his fellow draftees up to speed on the team’s new offensive scheme.

He, of course, played under Dolphins offensive coordinator Mike Sherman at Texas A&M, where they used a good chunk of the Dolphins’ new playbook. So once both he and third-round selection Michael Egnew were drafted, Tannehill contacted his former Big 12 rival, according to’s Jeff Darlington.

“Before I even (arrived in South Florida), he was texting me pictures of the playbook,” Egnew said. “He was just trying to get me acclimated to their offense, which was quite a different offense than what we had in Missouri.”

Last week’s rookie mini-camp was an ideal environment for Tannehill to get some reps as a leading man. Because of his familiarity with the offense, he was able to make sure his teammates were hitting the right spots and making the right reads.

“Well, I hope I’m looked at as the leader of the team, especially in these rookie minicamps,” said Tannehill, after Friday’s rookie camp. “Quarterbacks are the leaders of the team, and I want to try to get guys going. That’s a job of a leader. That’s a job of a quarterback.”

Once the veterans return and Tannehill is competing with Matt Moore and David Garrard, it will be interesting to see, given his rookie status, how much of a chance he’ll have to lead.
