Regular Officials to Return Immediately
By on September 27, 2012 at 9:50 am

Sometimes deadlines spur action and sometimes there’s a tipping point. With the labor dispute between the NFL and the Referees’ Association, there was definitely a tipping point.

Following Monday night’s controversial ending that gave the Seahawks a dramatic win over the Packers, public sentiment shifted so heavily to “get this thing done” that the league and its officials had little choice but to get back to the negotiating table and finish the deal.

That happened late Wednesday night when the league and the NFLRA sent out a joint statement announcing that an agreement had been reached and that regular officials would return to work in time for tonight’s game between the Browns and the Ravens. The “regular” officials will of course work the Dolphins-Cardinals game on Sunday, as well.

In the release, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell stated that “We appreciate the commitment of the NFLRA in working through the issues to reach this important agreement.”

NFLRA President Scott Green added “We are glad to be getting back on the field for this week’s games.”

Full details of the new, eight-year agreement can be seen here.
