QB Moore Takes First-Team Reps To Open Camp
By on July 27, 2012 at 4:31 pm

During the off-season practices that were open to the media, Dolphins QB David Garrard seemed to take a majority of snaps with the first-team offense.

Both Garrard and Matt Moore were quick to point out, though, that it would be presumptuous to make any assumptions–whomever the media saw take first-team reps during open practices, the veterans each said, was no doubt with the second team the next day.

Given the nature of things, this appeal didn’t stop anyone from speculating, of course. In the race to name a front-runner, opinions started to form.

Was this a sign of things to come? Or would Moore, based on his impressive play in the second half of last season, be given the first opportunity to run with the ones?

It turned out to be the latter, with Moore taking most of the first-team reps, though Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin said that it signified nothing in particular.

“I know a lot’s been written—there’s a lot of speculation that this guy’s way ahead, this guy’s behind, he’s not ready.” Philbin said. “That’s news to me. We’re still evaluating all the quarterbacks, Pat Devlin included. We’ll make a decision when it becomes evident.”

Moore, who was named the 2011 team MVP, finished 6-6 as a starter after replacing an injured Chad Henne in a Week 4 loss in San Diego. Since his impressive late-season run, though, the Dolphins added Garrard and first-round pick Ryan Tannehill,  creating, in turn, an open competition at quarterback.

Amid all of the transition this summer, Moore said he’s felt like he’s been in the loop the whole way.

“(Assistant) coach (Zac) Taylor has told us that tomorrow David will be getting those reps.  So we have a really good understanding like I’ve been saying all along,” Moore said. “But it was good to get out there and take those reps today. Whatever that means, we’ll figure that out later. Just try to make the most of the reps you get.”

Garrard won’t have to wait long to work with the first team again. He’ll get his chance on Saturday, essentially flipping spots with Moore. He, too, isn’t looking into the way the reps are being divided up, downplaying the significance of what’s happened thus far.

“They had to give it to somebody and they gave it to him. That’s fine” Garrard said. “We’re going to continue to battle throughout training camp, so I’m not reading anything into OTA’s or into the first day of training camp. We’ve got a lot snaps and we’ve got some games to play. Those will be more the deciding factors.”
