Long Feels Great, Ready To Get To Work
By on April 20, 2012 at 2:02 pm

Throughout last season, there was some concern about the severity of┬áJake Long’s nagging injuries.

Jesse Agler went one-on-one with Long to ask about his health and what his expectations are with the new coaching staff.

“I feel great,” Long said. “This is the healthiest I’ve felt in a long time. All healed up, working out 100 percent, ready to go.”

When September rolls around, it will be the first time that Long won’t be starting the season playing for Tony Sparano. After getting to know new coach Joe Philbin, who also has an offensive line background, Long is eager to get to work.

“Just these couple of weeks, he’s always been around the building saying Hi,” Long said. “Learning his philosophy the first day and just talking to us, I’m excited. I’m excited to learn from him.”

As Long, who’s entering his fifth season with the Dolphins, has become one of the team’s most tenured players, there’s been an increase in his leadership responsibilities.

“That’s something I try to pride myself in is being a leader, on and off the field, lead by example,” Long said. “When I need to, I need to speak up and be that vocal leader.”

With next week’s draft rapidly approaching, Long advised that the top prospects just go with the flow because much of the process is out of their hands. He, of course, had a relatively stress-free draft experience because his future was already set.

“It was easy for me because I signed three or four days before,” said Long, who was the first pick in the 2008 draft. “It was just a dream come true. I got to spend it with my family–we were in New York. Just took in all the sights and sounds.”
