Sports Illustrated’s Peter King recently spoke to Jesse Agler to discuss how the Dolphins can contend in the AFC East. This offseason, he sees a franchise determined to find an elite quarterback to go toe-to-toe with New England.
“That’s what they’ve lacked basically the entire Tom Brady era,” King said. “They’ve lacked the ability to go head-to-head with any consistency with Brady.
“No matter what’s going on internally with the Dolphins right now, the only thing that matters of great substance is getting a quarterback.”
Among the available quarterback options should be Peyton Manning, who will likely be released by Indianapolis next week. King feels that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, perhaps affected by past pursuits, will be hard-pressed to let this fish get away.
“That just leads me to believe that the guy who has the best chance, if he’s willing to go to South Florida, is Peyton Manning,” King said.
Another quarterback possibility this offsesaon will be Matt Flynn, Aaron Rodgers’ backup in Green Bay. Given the unknowns surrounding Flynn–he has only started two NFL games–his relationship with Joe Philbin could be key during the evaluation process.
“There has to a great belief in Matt Flynn by Joe Philbin to be the long-term quarterback for them to go down that road,” King said
