Week 15 is a crucial playoff week for many fantasy owners and Jon Cope of our fantasy team shines the spotlight on several players who may be worthwhile additions to your team.
Week 15 Waiver Wire Additions by Jon Cope
Knowshon Moreno, RB Broncos (owned in 34.4% of NFL.com leagues)- I put Moreno on this list several weeks ago, but since he’s still available in over 65% of leagues, he returns to the list. Moreno is clearly the workhorse running back in Denver as he received a staggering 32 carries last week and reward fantasy owners with 119 yards and a touchdown. Moreno has a good matchup against a banged-up Ravens defense that just allowed 172 yards rushing to the Redskins. Peyton Manning isn’t afraid to use the running game when defenses have both safeties back, and I’d expect Moreno to get plenty of touches again this Sunday.
David Wilson, RB Giants (owned in 47.8% of NFL.com leagues)- The Giants 1st round pick out of Virginia Tech finally appears to be out of Tom Coughlin’s dog-house after rushing for 100 yards and 2 touchdowns, while also returning a kickoff for a TD on Sunday against the Saints. Wilson’s increased role in the offense was necessitated by an injury to Ahmad Bradshaw, and although Bradshaw did briefly return to action against the New Orleans, his status is still uncertain for Sunday. If Bradshaw can’t go on Sunday, or if he’s limited, Wilson will be a very good start for fantasy owners in a matchup against a generous Falcons run defense.
Bilal Powell, RB Jets (owned in 4.6% of NFL.com leagues)- Powell has earned at least a share of the carries in the Jets backfield with 4 touchdowns in the team’s last 4 games, and a nice 19 carry 78 yard performance on Sunday in Jacksonville. The Jets, apparently not trusting their passing game, ran on 42 of their 61 offensive plays on Sunday. I would expect Tony Sparano and Rex Ryan to continue the ground-n-pound offense this week against a vulnerable Titans run defense.
Jason Avant, WR Eagles (owned in 1.2% of NFL.com leagues)- With DeSean Jackson out for the season, Avant has seen plenty of targets in Philly’s passing game over the last several weeks. The veteran receiver out of Michigan had 7 catches for 133 yards on Sunday to follow-up a 4 reception, 79 yard performance in Week 13. Avant has a somewhat difficult matchup on Thursday night against an underrated Bengals defense, but if you’re desperate for wide receiver help, I’d recommend a man who has become one of the top options in Philly.
St. Louis Rams Defense/Special Teams (owned in 5.5% of NFL.com leagues)- The Rams defense has quietly emerged as one of the league’s top fantasy options in the last several weeks, posting an average of 19 points a game in NFL.com leagues. The Rams get a favorable matchup this week as they host a Vikings offense that is without their top receiver, Percy Harvin, and has a struggling young quarterback in Christian Ponder. I’d recommend starting the Rams defense over the 49ers defense, the Ravens defense and the Steelers defense as all three of those units face very difficult matchups in Week 15.
