NFL Stars from South Florida

Tackle Vernon Carey went to high school in Miami, played at the University of Miami, and now plays for the Dolphins.

Kids from all over the country look forward to the summertime just to do whatever they like. School is out and most kids look forward to camps for recreation, bonding with other children, or to just be part of the group. The Miami Dolphins Academy plays a big role locally in the development of our youth of South Florida by putting on football and cheerleading camps, as well as a 7-on-7 tournament for youth and high school children across the Tri-County area.

Some of the talent displayed at the 7-on-7 tournament last week by the youth and high school kids was awesome. You can definitely see the future is bright for some of these children to continue playing football. Many of the professional athletes of today started on the same playgrounds that these kids displayed their skills on last week! South Florida has produced a multitude of pros that encompass all major professional sports, but the NFL arguably is the most populated.

When you think of the stars that came from this area, Pro Football Hall of Famers like Ted Hendricks and Michael Irvin immediately come to mind. Names like Brian Piccalo, Derrick Thomas, Sean Taylor, Lorenzo White, and Isaac Bruce all have dominated in the NFL. It’s really quite the accomplishment that the South Florida area has produced the quality and quantity of talent that makes up the NFL of yesterday and today. Current stars like Andre Johnson, Jonathan Vilma, Asante Samuel, Frank Gore, and Chad Ochocinco are just a sample of what this area has produced.

Some of this talent that was grown here in South Florida has made its way on to the roster of the Miami Dolphins. Current players like Benny Sapp and Vernon Carey, as well as Al Harris, who was on the team for part of last season, all started their careers in the Sunshine State! There are former Dolphins such as Daryl Porter and Autry Denson that give back to the community by coaching at local high schools in Broward County. Former Dolphin Twan Russell represents the team as the Director of Youth and Community Programs, and leads the charge for the Dolphins in giving back to the youth of this area.

This list can go on for ever! Benny and Brian Blades, Dan Morgan, Antonio Bryant, Willis McGahee, etc…you get the point! Hopefully I’m speaking for all of these athletes in saying thank you to all of the parents, coaches and volunteers that helped guide, instruct, coach, and educate the youth of today. You are sculpting the future leaders of tomorrow, and possibly the future starts of tomorrow.
