Keith Sims: Pro Bowl Thrill Hard to Top

Jake Long and Cameron Wake have punched their tickets to the Pro Bowl

I’m a lucky guy. I get to talk and write about football all day. And I’m even luckier because of some of the guys I get to talk football with. One of those guys is Keith Sims. A three-time Pro Bowler as a member of the Dolphins, I’ve come to learn that Keith takes the Pro Bowl very seriously. Keep reading to see some of Keith’s favorite Hawaii memories as he congratulates Jake Long and Cameron Wake on their Pro Bowl selections…

Yesterday was a huge day for the “elite players” in the NFL as Pro Bowl selections were announced. Football is the ultimate team sport, but anyone who has ever played a team sport knows that within that sport there is always an All-Star team selected from the best of the best players. As an NFL player, the #1 goal is to win a Super Bowl, but the #1 individual goal each player has is to become a Pro Bowl player.

I feel the Pro Bowl is such a great honor. You are selected as the best in your conference for your play that season. As players, we took it very seriously when we voted on our team ballot. It didn’t matter if we were bitter rivals (AKA the Jets) or best friends. We took our vote very seriously and tried to reward only those players that deserved this tremendous honor.

Even though the Pro Bowl may not be the best “TV event” and the season is over so fans aren’t as tuned in, each and every Pro Bowl player takes the selection very seriously.

I can remember my first Pro Bowl. I was voted as a reserve, but ended up starting due to an injury replacement. You can’t imagine how much fun we had. Picture this: driving to practice at Aloha stadium in a small reed convertible; Richmond Webb driving, Cortez Kennedy in the passenger seat, and me stuck in the back (I was the only 1st timer so i got the back seat) driving down the highway jamming to tunes!

Being a Pro-Bowler means you have reached a status of an elite player in this league, that other head coaches and your peers, the guys that you battle against on the field each and every week think you are one of the Best football players in the world! I have never met a player that made the Pro Bowl that wasn’t extremely motivated to make it back to Hawaii.

My last thought: it was so important to me to become a Pro-Bowler that I vowed to not visit Hawaii while i was playing until i made the Pro Bowl. Well, i was Hawaii-bound after my fourth NFL season. Aloha to all the 2011 Pro Bowlers, especially Cam Wake and Jake Long!
