From the Podium 9/9/10

After practice this afternoon, Dolphins coach Tony Sparano met with the media and addressed a variety of topics in advance of Sunday’s opener at Buffalo. With the team re-signing OL Cory Procter today and terminating the contract of center Jake Grove, the coach explained the situation essentially by saying that Procter provides more roster flexibility on gameday (he is a guard who can also play center). Other notes:

-When asked if the amount of money Grove was due played into the decision to let him go, the coach said it was not and explained again that on this team, the best players are going to play. He doesn’t care how much money you make, how long you’ve been in the league, or where you were drafted.

-The coach said that this year’s team was the “most complete” in his three years in Miami. He said there is depth on the defense and at the offensive skill positions and that he has more qualified special teams guys as well as bigger special teams guys.

-Despite the fact that we’ve seen very little of the defensive playbook in the pre-season, the coach said he’s confident in what Mike Nolan’s unit will do because of what he’s seen in practice.

-Finally, when asked who his backup quarterback would this week (Chad Pennington or Tyler Thigpen), the coach simply said “You’ll see on Sunday.”

UPDATE: Here are some video highlights, which include more on the decision to let Jake Grove go; an assessment of where Vontae Davis is now as compared to a year ago; and what the ONE thing is that the Fins need to do well if they want to win on Sunday:

These latest moves, including The Tunas odd timing, sure has me scratching my head. It sure feels like money is one of the driving factors. Could Bill have gotten wind of what the owner was planning to do and wanted no part of it? Are these the kind of moves you make with just days remaining before your season starts? I’ve been a fan since the Dolphins inception, and can’t ever remember this kind of turmoil just before the bell rings. What’s your take Jesse?
