Coach Sparano met with the media late this morning and discussed some of the topics of the day. Unfortunately, the first bit of news was bad news, as the coach confirmed reports that rookie linebacker AJ Edds has a torn ACL and will most likely miss the season. This is a definite bad break for Miami, as Edds was expected to be a contributor in his first season. The coach, though, as you would expect, was pretty matter-of-fact about the injury, calling it one of the typical “body blows” that comes during training camp.

Other things that stood out:

-LB Koa Misi is in the midst of making the transition from being a lineman in college to a linebacker in the pros and Sparano spoke about the main challenges of such a switch. He said that when a player is used to playing with his hand on the ground, there are changes that have to be made physically. Also, the footwork is obviously totally different playing off the line. He said he liked that Misi was not making the same mistakes over and over again, which can’t be said for everyone out there.

-Staying at linebacker, the coach spoke about the way that Karlos Dansby’s presence is beneficial ┬áto Channing Crowder. He also said that coming off the injury, Crowder is not facing any physical limitations.

-As for the big NFL story of the day, the coach chuckled a bit when asked about Brett Favre’s latest retirement threat. He basically said he’d believe it when he saw Favre sitting on his couch Week 1.

Coach won’t speak to the assembled media again until 12:30 tomorrow afternoon, but he WILL speak with The Finsiders today at 5. So tune in to hear what he has to say and if you want to submit a question, you can do so here. Check the video below for more of what he had to say this morning:
